Pasichnyk H.P. Lexical, Semantic and Structural Peculiarities of the Discourse "Description of Nature" in the English Novels of 18th – the beginning of 20th centuries. – A manuscript.

A thesis for the Scholarly Degree of Candidate of Philology in Speciality 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages. – Lviv Polytechnic National University. – Lviv, 2005.

The dissertation is concerned with a comprehensive study of lexical, semantic, syntactic-structural and stylistic-functional peculiarities of descriptions of nature in the English novels of 18th – the beginning of 20th century written by outstanding men of letters of that time. The analysis is based on 29 novels, embracing over 12,000 pages of texts and 1,080 excerpts of nature discourses from them. The theme has not been the subject of philological investigation as yet.

Three main compositional-speech forms traditionally singled out in texts of fiction are: narrative, description and argumentation. Description as a constituent of the compositional forms can be realized in various discourses, one of which is "discourse of nature" (discourse of landscape, descriptive discourse) presenting details of the scenery, natural phenomena, objects and things.

The communicative approach to the analysis of a literary work proves an effective way of modern linguistic studies. It presupposes the unity of cognitive-semantic, functional stylistic and conceptual characteristics, accounting for the use of traditional and present–day methods of analysis.

The cognitive semantic aspect of descriptions in the discourses of nature [DN] tackled in Chapter 1 is treated as a recurrent act of lingual identification of natural phenomena, objects, processes and properties of reality. This identification causes search for classes/groups in which to place their lexical items on the basis of those already known to us. Identical features, as a rule, are peculiar to synonyms and synonymous expressions, repetitions, homogenuous members, parallel constructions, etc, the fact taken into consideration in our analysis. In view of this in Chapter 1 groups of words (sun, weather, sea, tree) conveying thematic similarity in discourses of nature have been singled out. They are considered key-words in conveying content-factual information and prove essential for the realistic descriptions of natural phenomena in general and for specific conceptual, stylistic functioning in particular.

The corpus-based study of lexical components in landscape discourses enabled to systematize key notional categories in them and create the frame of the lexical group of DN.

Chapter 2 deals with the syntactical-semantic organization of DN with modelling and explaining the means of its representation in the novels of different authors during the analysed period. The tendency towards complex syntactical structures in landscape discourses has been registered.

The 3-rd chapter combining the results of the previous ones analyses lexical-stylistic and conceptual peculiarities of nature descriptions, the ways of their functional transformations which is part and parcel of the evolution of the prose genre.

The study of landscape discourses allowed to retrace the stages of the changes in the direct logical lexical meaning and syntactical structure in the novels while viewing them from synchronic and diachronic positions. The wide use of lexical, syntactical stylistic and other image-making devices accounts for the deepening of subjective modality and emotionality of the landscape descriptions, which acquired additional nuances of meaning, such as psychologism, anthropomorphism, creating content-conceptual information and conceptual sphere of the discourse: concepts become conspicuous image-bearing lexical units in them. Different types of discourses of nature have been singled out on the basis of their content-conceptual meaning, stylistic functions and pragmaticallity. Landscape discourses are of prominent country-oriented knowledge; some of them are permeated with culture and gender specific flavour.

The use of the linguistic modelling method in different approaches to the undertaken analysis made it possible to represent the obtained results in the form of tables and schemes. Both frame and informational-semantic net of DN are intended to make significant generalizations not available in other lexical resources as well as to supply research tools for further studies.

In the dissertation the procedure frame, that is algorithm of DN, has been developed, as a kind of methodological condition, which organizes stereotyped situations and helps to interprete them.

The suggested methods of analysis prove productive and can be applied to the study of DN in the works of English authors and in other languages as well.

Key-words: discourse "description of nature", concept, algorithm, frame, informational semantic net, semantic-syntactical space, lexical-thematic group.
